β¦unless you are having thoughts of un-aliving your self. Then you will indeed be imprisoned until psych either clears you to go home, or admits you to the psych unit. If admitted, security will escort you (sometimes in restraints) to the psych unit for registration and admission. EVERYTHING will be taken from you, and then youβll be given a bed (usually in a shared room) made in one piece out of the same rounded plastic/resin thatβs used to make childrenβs play furniture, with a mattress atop. Someone will come stare at you to make sure you aren't doing anything to hurt yourself every 5 minutes until the psych team says otherwise.
You WILL be infantilized and forced to participate in activities like coloring with crayons, banging on bongo drums, singing songs together in group, taking medications that make you feel exhausted all the time, doing grade-school type worksheets, sitting with a group of total strangers to talk about the most private and personal information of your life, writing out a list of βSafety Stepsβ to take, when you inevitably feel the same way again, and most likely, youβll have to sign a Safety Contract to be allowed to go home.
You can refuse to participate; thatβs your right. But thereβs always a punishment-by-FOMO. Participation lets you earn your special βgold star stickerβ privileges (π) which can be anything from getting to CHOOSE what you eat for your meals, to trips outside for fresh air, being allowed to use the recreation room, being allowed to do things like shave and do your hair (while being watched of course), and having visitors. YES, they will absolutely hold your βvisitor privilegesβ hostage to coerce you into cooperation.
Eventually, most people learn a very dangerous lesson: to never ever EVER tell anyone if they have those thoughts again, because they canβt bear that kind of treatment βagainβ. Sad but true.
You're right we are NOT your prisoner but we sure as hell are the insurance companies. I work for a top healthcare provider and if you go to the hospital and sign in for whatever reason (even that silly sore throat you mentioned) once you've put your name on that hospital treatment paperwork and you leave Against Medical Advice the insurance carrier then has the right to not F*k** pay the bill and it becomes your out of pocket expense. So that $100 copay just became a $2k fee for walking through those ER doors and lets hope you didn't have any scans or xrays and then walk out AMA bc now you're talking $10k plus you on the hook for. I love your content and humor and I get not wanting to waste the ER's time for trivial things but people should also know the possible consequences of said leaving AMA.
my wife AMA'd from an ICU when they gave her contrast dye that put her into kidney failure, and she gained over 20 pounds of water weight in less than 24 hours. they KEPT GIVING HER DRIPS and none of the drips had meds so there was no reason for the drip. she went to another hospital and they did a TON of stuff to fix her up. she's now on dialysis because of that hospital's ineptitude, and i've already told several officials and lawyers what to expect from this VETERAN if i ever see those doctor's faces in my town of 500,000 people. hashtag pink-eraser.
I wish more places had 24 urgent care centers to distinguish between emergencies and situations that aren't bad enough for ER but do need some type of care in the night. For example, we had two women – one had a pilonidal cyst so large she could only lie on her stomach. Another came in from a sulfa allergy with crazy swelling. We had to take the allergy patient back immediately. The cyst lady was super nice, and she said she knew she wasn't an emergency, and if there were an urgent care open she would have gone there. It just happened to get bad after UC hours.
I tried to leave when I was supposed to get my wisdom teeth out. The doctor and his nurse blocked the bottom of the bed so I without thinking I kicked him. He moved.π I'm not a fun patient.π
That's not always true that you can leave whenever you are. The medical doctor can be baker act you, and then you can't leave. But the doctor has to have good reason in doing so
Hospital, funeral homes, fast food restaurants advertising budget is basically .01%. Customers NEED THEM they really DONT need you individually because if not you there will be John & if not John they will be Betty.. when have you ever seen a not "Cocky" Doctor? "NEVER" Because they know Demand for them is so great they can do whatever the (.) They want..
I hade a allergic reaction to a medication and the nurse said fuck her let jer pass out in the parking lot because i started freaking out i didn't het a bill after i threatened to sue it compazine amd i got nuts lol
I wish more hospitals had next to the ER a 'care' center so less urgent medical issues could be addressed and not take up space of those really needing ER attention.

Except when you're suicidal.
This man is talking about the non-psych section, I guess
However we will need your insurance info firstβ¦
If I go up to ask when my 85 year old mom with shortness of breath will be seen should I go away or should I keep bugging the nurse ?

No insurance? You're welcome to leave any time.
Unless you have an iv in, and you wait six hours to get someone to remove it lmao
